Retire Police Chief, Author, and Educator

Daniel Hahn retired in 2021 from a 34-year career as a police officer.

He rose through the ranks of the Sacramento Police Department to the rank of captain before becoming the first African American police officer and police chief in Roseville, CA, in 2011.

He returned to his home town of Sacramento as the first African American Police Chief in the city’s over 170+ year history.

Daniel grew up in the Oak Park neighborhood of Sacramento after being adopted at 3 months old.

He witnessed a violent murder in front of his home when he was 9 years old, and he was arrested for resisting a Sacramento Police Officer when he was 16-years old.

His younger brother was the victim of gun violence when he was murdered in downtown Sacramento, and Daniel responded to the call.

Daniel Hahn has committed himself to researching history over the last decade and has developed a course he calls A Way Forward.

He utilizes this course to engage and encourage discussion regarding how we got to our current day challenges, and more importantly, how do we move forward for a better tomorrow for all people.

Daniel has written opinion pieces for print media, provided expert analysis on local and national news programs, teaches history and implicit bias, is an adjunct professor, a national keynote speaker, and has a podcast called A Way Forward.

Daniel is a firm believer that TOGETHER we can make tomorrow better for all people – TOGETHER We Build.
